The Railgunner is a high-damage dealing single target tower with a very long Reload Time. It is meant for dealing with slow moving, high-health enemies and bosses, which is why it is used to be set on Strongest targeting upon first being placed. As its store description states, it is based off of the Railgunner from Tower Battles. It is a great tower for Expert Mode due to it being able to deal full damage to armored enemies like the Revived Titan and Armored Runner. However, it will struggle with enemies that have high Laser Resistances like Resurrected Laser Gunners and Assailants, which are common in Endless Mode. Railgunner will also tend to struggle with crowds, so players should have splash towers like Missile Trooper and Warship to accompany it. However, it still has air detection for flying Enemies and high damage to chew down bosses.
Upgrades[]
Its Top Path grants it a shorter Reload Time, Stealth Detection, and Air Detection while having a cheaper cost compared to its Bottom Path, and is granted Pierce after purchasing its fourth upgrade. However, it deals significantly less Damage and has less than half of the Health of its Bottom Path. Like the Juggernaut'sTop Path, it is semi-useful for basically every gamemode but Endless Mode, due to Top PathLaser Gunners and Golden Juggernauts being overall better choices.
The Bottom Path for the Railgunner grants immense Damage, Range and Stun Immunity, but is very expensive, has a very long Aim Time, and does not gain Stealth Detection. Farms and Bottom PathEDJ can help with some of the Railgunner's expensive upgrades while increasing its range at the same time, an X-3 Laser Gunner's Stealth Sensor ability or an X-4 Ghost's C7 Drone ability can help reveal stealth enemies to compensate for its lack of stealth detection, and a Top PathJohn and Commander can boost the towers damage significantly. It is great for every gamemode but Endless Mode due to the majority of enemies in that mode having laser resistance, but still very decent to kill most bosses.
Farms are great for making it easier to purchase the Railgunner's costly upgrades.
The EDJ is also very useful when paired with the Railgunner, as it increases its already huge range and lowers its expensive upgrade costs, allowing you to save lots of money.
If the player wishes to maximize the damage output for Railgunner, it is recommended to use John'sRage Mode and the Toxicnator's Toxic Blast abilities in tandem, allowing them to greatly increase the Bottom PathRailgunner'sDamage.
It should be noted for the Bottom Path that you will need to time abilities in sync with the shot due to the abilities' short durations and the Bottom PathRailgunner's long Aim Time.
It is not recommended to use the top path's EDJ's Super Encore ability on the bottom path Railgunner as the EDJ's firerate boost cannot shorten the tower's Aim Time.
If money is a problem for the players, they can opt for the Top Path as it is cheaper while still being able to take down medium health enemies like the Charger Boss.
However, the Top Path will be less reliable against very high health enemies or final wave bosses such as Eradicator MK II due to its low damage output per shot.
Tower baiting is not necessary with the Railgunner, as the Bottom Path Railgunner has decently high-health, enabling it to tank attacks from bosses such as the Revived Plague Doctor and Eradicator MK II. Early on, it is costly to be used as effective baits.
Other towers like the Ranger and John are generally better as baits due to their lower cost.
Players should place other towers to help take care of lower-health enemies due to the Railgunner's high reload/aim time, which also makes it a terrible choice for early defending and crowd control.
Fast enemies such as the Charger Boss or Revived Abomination can be an issue for Railgunners as they shoot quite slowly and these enemies might escape their range.
Reliable DPS towers like the Laser Gunner and Juggernaut can be used to clean up fast enemies for the Railgunner.Patrol Boat'sBottom Path could also help exponentially, though you must keep in mind the Patrol Boat can only be placed on water.
The Railgunner's upgrades, Proto Ammo & Lightning Cells use renders of the Tower Battles towers, Railgunner & Phaser.
The Railgunner's Top Path shares the same design as the Rail Trooper unit from a Top PathBarracks.
Likewise, both of them are based off of Zone Troopers from Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.
The Railgunner originally was set to "Strongest" targeting by default after being placed.
Elite, a popular YouTuber, stated in a video that he was the one who recommended John to set the Railgunner's default targeting to "Strongest".
The X-5 Railgunner has the second highest damage per shot in the game, just behind the X-5 Warship.
The Railgunner's previous name was "Rail Trooper".
This was quickly changed the day before Railgunner's initial release due to the Barracks tower already using the name "Rail Trooper" for one of its units.
Despite this change, the top path Railgunner still resembles the Rail Trooper.
Before it was publicly released into the game, the Railgunner's X-5 level used the Tower Battles Level 5 Railgunner sounds, as seen in the trailer.
The Railgunner's Tower Battles skin looks different compared to its appearance on the upgrade icons for it.
